Life Skills Based Small Counseling Groups Being Offered at VCS
*Groups in bold are currently underway. The next round of groups will begin in February based on student interest and needs.
Team Mom: The purpose of the “Team Mom” counseling group will be to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to raise their children emotionally and financially, complete their education, and research careers they hope to obtain upon graduation.
Let it Go (Conflict Resolution): The purpose of “Let It Go” is to teach students how to handle conflict resolution in a healthy way and to teach children to stay calm when in a disagreement, be able to identify and express feelings with appropriate behaviors, and be able to find multiple solutions that will satisfy all parties without needing the help of an adult.
Elevate (self-esteem for girls): The purpose of a group setting to address self-esteem issues in females is to provide them with a safe place to address issues and share stories. Members will learn how to feel empowered by their peers.
School-2-Life (senior transitions from school to college and careers): This group will focus on strategies to improve the stress level of seniors preparing the transition to life after high school. Group members can apply the skills and strategies learned in group to their everyday lives.
Rock the Test (standardized test anxiety): The purpose of this group is to help students work through the detrimental thought processes that cause anxiety. The activities for the group will provide the students with different ways to deal with their anxieties and gain skills that they can use to relieve the symptoms they experience.
My Changing Family (support for students living in “non-traditional” families): The purpose of this group is to help students find ways to manage the stress and turmoil that accompanies changes or differences, like divorce, separation, living with grandparents or other guardians, blended families, having same-gender parents, and adoption.
Grief Relief: The purpose of this group is to provide support for students who have lost a loved one. Students will learn skills to heal and manage difficult emotions.
Climbing Media Mountains (social media and cyber bullying): The purpose of this group is to help students gain a better understanding of what cyber bullying is and how it is affecting society. The group will learn the right ways to use technology and what steps to take if they or another is being cyber bullied.
Social Thinkers: The group will be structured and focused on finding solutions for the development of social skills and issues teens and adolescents are facing. They will also learn how to work through some of the difficult situations they experience every day.
